Eve and the Serpent
What happened in the Garden of Eden

Most of us were taught even from childhood that Eve ate the forbidden fruit in the garden of Eden. She took a bite from an apple. This is what started man down the path of sin.

Although this very brief synopsis is true, there is more detail that can be gleaned from the Bible about this event. Using the King James version of the Bible and a Strong's concordance using the Hebrew and Greek dictionaries we will attempt to bring out some additional details that will shed quite a bit of light not only on this single event but will make it much easier to understand much more of the Bible then before. Each time we make a important point we will provide supporting documentation for that point.

Creation of Adam & Eve.

God also gave Adam and Eve but one simple commandment:

"Genesis 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die."

At this point I must explain that there were two trees in the Garden of Eden, one was the tree of life, the other was the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

"Genesis: 2:9 And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil."

As you can tell from Gen. 2:9, God has given Adam every tree that is pleasand to sight, and good for food. But there were a couple of other trees in the garden as well, the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

I have to point out here that God often refferes to people as trees:

Ezekiel 31:3-5
31:3   Behold, the Assyrian was a cedar in Lebanon with fair branches, and with a shadowing shroud, and of an high stature; and his top was among the thick boughs.
31:4   The waters made him great, the deep set him up on high with her rivers running round about his plants, and sent out her little rivers unto all the trees of the field.
31:5   Therefore his height was exalted above all the trees of the field, and his boughs were multiplied, and his branches became long because of the multitude of waters, when he shot forth.
Ezekiel 31:8-9
31:8   The cedars in the garden of God could not hide him: the fir trees were not like his boughs, and the chestnut trees were not like his branches; nor any tree in the garden of God was like unto him in his beauty.
31:9   I have made him fair by the multitude of his branches: so that all the trees of Eden, that were in the garden of God, envied him.
Revelation 11:3-4
11:3   And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.
11:4   These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth

Incident in the garden.
Here is where we are going to get into an area that may challenge some readers. From childhood, most of us, including myself, were taught that Eve ate an apple and gave to Adam, and that was the sin that caused all the trouble. I have read some fairly detailed accounts of exactly how this (eating of the apple) was a sin. But now lets look at another teaching here, and I will try to verify everything as we walk through these events.

The serpent and the tree of the knowledge of good and evile, these are one in the same being. First lets look at the serpent, the serpent was able to talk and it was subtil, the serpent, as described in the book of Revelation is none other than Satan!

Revelation 12:9
And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

As you can see, "The serpent" is one of Satan's names. Also, as I demonstrated above, God referrs to people as trees. Who other than Satan could be the "tree of the knowledge of good and evil?" It even points out in Revelation 12:9 that that old serpent deceiveth the whole world, this more than qualifies him to be called subtil.

Genesis 3:1
Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

In the Garden of Eden, the tree of life was Christ and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil was none othen than Satan himself.

As the serpent (Satan), which is one of God's most perfect and beautiful creations:

Cain killed Able.

Cain banished from the garden.

Gen. 3:1-16
3:1
Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
3:2
And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
3:3
But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
3:4
And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
3:5
For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
3:6
And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
3:7
And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
3:8
And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.
3:9
And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
3:10
And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
3:11
And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?
3:12
And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.
3:13
And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.
3:14
And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
3:15
And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
3:16
Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

2 Cor 11:1-3
11:3
But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

Matthew 13:23-30; 13:36-43
This is the parable of the tares.
13:23
But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
13:24
Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field:
13:25
But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.
13:26
But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also.
13:27
So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares?
13:28
He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?
13:29
But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them.
13:30
Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.
This is the explaination of the parable of the tares, it is a direct answer to one of Christ's disciples.
13:36
Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field.
13:37
  He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man;
13:38
  The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one;
13:39
The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.
13:40
As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world.
13:41
  The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity;
13:42
And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
13:43
Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.
This is proof that there are children of the "wicked one (Satan)" in the world as well as Children of God.
