Was the Book of Johah a Fish Story?
|
I have heard on a few occasions that the book of Jonah was a fish story just too hard to believe. This is the reason that I am writing this paper. Jonah was a prophet called by God to preach to the people of Nineveh so they could be spared the wrath of God for worshiping false gods. In this case the god in question was Dagan, a fish god. God often teaches by example, knowing human nature, what would it take to change an entire city to change from worshiping Dagon, a fish god, and turn to the real God? And even so, this revival took place almost over night. God called Johan to go and preach to Nineveh, Jonah knew that if Nineveh were saved that that people would invade Israel and take Jonah's people as slaves and prisoners. God setup the circumstances that would cause Jonah to be thrown overboard, to be swalloed by a giant fish (not a whale), and during the next three days have the fish deliver Jonah to the city of Nineveh. At that time the fish threw up Jonah (who was dead, his body went into corruption) revived Jonah. What the people of Nineveh saw was a fish (which they worshiped) deliver a prophet to their land who preached of the true God and converted the entire city of Nineveh to (YHVH), Yehovah. See Dagon for more information. |
