The overall purpose of this document is to demonstrate the relationship between Idumia, Edom, Seir, Sela, Joktheel, Esau and Petra. Esau is the patriarch of the Edomites which reside in the city of Seir in Idumia.
Genesis 25:24-25
24 And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.
25 And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau.
KJV
Genesis 25:29-34
29 And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint:
30 And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.
31 And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.
32 And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?
33 And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.
34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.
Genesis 36:1
36 Now these are the generations of Esau, who is Edom.
KJV
Genesis 36:7-10
7 For their riches were more than that they might dwell together; and the land wherein they were strangers could not bear them because of their cattle.
8 Thus dwelt Esau in mount Seir: Esau is Edom.
9 And these are the generations of Esau the father of the Edomites in mount Seir:
10 These are the names of Esau's sons; Eliphaz the son of Adah the wife of Esau, Reuel the son of Bashemath the wife of Esau.

If you go over the Strongs definitions below, you will see how Starting with Esau all of the information points to Idumea being Edom, Seir, Sela, Joktheel and (not Biblical) Petra.
Idumea: OT:123
'Edom (ed-ome'); or (fully) 'Edowm (ed-ome'); from OT:122; red [see Genesis 25:25]; Edom, the elder twin-brother of Jacob; hence the region (Idumaea) occupied by him:
KJV - Edom, Edomites, Idumea.
Edom: OT:123
'Edom (ed-ome'); or (fully) 'Edowm (ed-ome'); from OT:122; red [see Genesis 25:25]; Edom, the elder twin-brother of Jacob; hence the region (Idumaea) occupied by him:
KJV - Edom, Edomites, Idumea.
Seir: OT:8165
Se`iyr (say-eer'); formed like OT:8163; rough; Seir, a mountain of Idumaea and its aboriginal occupants, also one in Palestine:
KJV - Seir.
Sela: OT:5554
Cela` (seh'-lah); the same as OT:5553; Sela, the rock-city of Idumaea:
KJV - rock, Sela (-h).
Joktheel: OT:3371
Yoqthe'el (yok-theh-ale'); probably from the same as OT:3348 and OT:410; veneration of God [compare OT:3354]; Joktheel, the name of a place in Palestine, and of one in Idumaea:
KJV - Joktheel.
Esau: OT:6215
`Esav (ay-sawv'); apparently a form of the passive participle of OT:6213 in the original sense of handling; rough (i.e. sensibly felt); Esav, a son of Isaac, including his posterity:
KJV - Esau.
Ezekiel 35:15
15 As thou didst rejoice at the inheritance of the house of Israel, because it was desolate, so will I do unto thee: thou shalt be desolate, O mount Seir, and all Idumea, even all of it: and they shall know that I am the Lord.
KJV
Genesis 32:3
3 And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.
